Antique Jewelry: It's All About Gems!

The word Jewelry is derived from the Latin word "jocale", meaning "plaything," and the word "jewel", which was anglicized in the 13th century from the Old French word "jouel". The word "jewelry" (spelled Jewellery in European English) is used to describe any piece of precious material (gemstones, noble metals, etc.) used to adorn one's self.

The term Antique Jewelry is a collective definition of jewelry styles from a few periods in history dated from 1760 to 1950 years. It is commonly divided into a few groups by the historical periods:

1760 - 1837 - Late Georgian
1837 - 1855 - Early Victorian, romantic jewelry
1855 - 1880 - Mid-Victorian, grand jewelry
1885 - 1900 - Late Victorian, aesthetic jewelry
1894 - 1923 - Arts and Crafts Jewelry
1895 - 1915 - Art Nouveau
1901 - 1915 - Edwardian jewelry
1915 - 1935 - Art Deco jewelry
1945 - 1960 - Retro jewelry

Antique jewelry could also termed as "vintage", its special features are variety op precious and semi-precious stones, pearls, different kinds of gold, platinum, hand-crafted elements, mill-grain edges, engravings and much more.
